ANBERLIN Makes One Final Tour Stop In Seattle

Anberlin made an astonishing announcement in January: They would be releasing their 7th album this summer, and it would be their last (watch the video they shared with fans here).

Making good on their promise to play in their favorite venues last week, they made one last stop in Seattle on their final tour. Joining them on stage for eight of the 34 total tour dates was local band, “The Weather” (formally “Campfire OK”), who decided on the name change near the end of 2013 due to some band member changes. Those changes resulted in a new sound, and from the crowd’s reaction, they liked it! Their debut EP The Waters Electric will be available soon.

The show Monday night at The Showbox was sold out, and it’s no wonder. Anberlin has a history here. Their third album, Cities, was recorded in Seattle at London Bridge Studios, and one of its tracks (“The Unwinding Cable Car”) was inspired by a walk through Pike Place Market.  Lead singer, Stephen Christian, said that no other city has the same effect on him. He was genuine with his heartfelt thanks from the stage, (which included a shout out to the Seahawks, and also to player Richard Sherman, who was among the crowd). Their 21+ song set list included songs from their catalog of six previous albums, and didn’t include any off their latest (and final) release, Lowborn. They simply wanted to play fan favorites, and from the appreciative  sounds from the crowd,  they were.

Fans may wonder if this is truly Anberlin’s last tour. Recently Motley Crue even signed legal documents prior to their “final tour,” stating that they really were disbanding, and would never perform as the group again. As for Anberlin, they say it is the end. Fans are still in disbelief, but are taking them on their word. The band wanted to end on a high note, and they wanted to go out still loving what they do and why they do it. Most musicians never really just stop. Some continue on as solo artists, and some join other projects. Anberlin’s Christian even started a side project, Anchor & Braille (please note their actual website link no longer exists) back in 2004, simply because he had written so many songs he knew Anberlin could never record them all. That music had a different feel, but still yearned to be heard. Wondering if they even got to all of the “lost” songs, that’s up for debate. Whether or not we will see other members of the band again on stage, that too is unknown, for now. So is this the “end?” Fans hope not, but are left to speculate.
