John Maus is known for his intensely physical and nihilistic live shows, during which he screams into a microphone while pulling at his hair and desperately clutching at his sweat-soaked chest, inspiring audiences to ask, “is he ok?” The Austin, Minnesota-born artist is in the midst of a mostly sold-out, globe-spanning winter tour that will bring him to the Crocodile on Tuesday, January 23 in support of his excellent 2017 album Screen Memories. His fourth studio album finds the post-punk political theorist honing his ability to create baroque-flavored goth-pop that’s equal parts infectious and apocalyptic. This is his first tour with a backing band, and Maus is beginning to shed his notoriety as a performance artist in favor of a more expressive, dimensional live show.
Los Angeles experimental indie project Holy Shit will open for Maus. It is the brainchild of Matt Fishbeck, whose long list of collaborators includes Ariel Pink, Geneva Jacuzzi, Night Jewel, Girls’ Christopher Owens, and John Maus himself. Holy Shit’s 2017 album Solid Rain was the first musical release by avant-garde theory and fiction publisher Semiotext(e).
